The TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) has been organizing special-purpose
unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) contest for students since 2016 The BOOM, which is described in this report, was
designed, manufactured, tested and won the best design award from the TUBITAK fixed wing category in 2016 It was
produced from carbon fiber composite except for the main control surfaces in accordance with the requirements of
TUBITAK.
According to the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Turkey (DGCA) directives, the UAV is operated as a component
of unmanned aerial vehicles, capable of continuous flight through aerodynamic forces, controlled by a remote UAV pilot
without a pilot or autonomous operation planned by UAV pilot [1]. Unmanned aerial vehicles can be categorized
according to many factors such as flight time, weight, altitude, while according to DGCA of Turkey BOOM is in the
category of UAV0 [1], according to United Nations publications and many academic studies is in the category of mini
[2]. In previous competitions, unmanned aerial vehicles were designed and manufactured from balsa, foam (EPS), ABS
polymer or partially carbon fiber composite [3]. Tugay designed, manufactured and successfully tested composite
components of a UAV's landing gear to be subjected to high compression strength, anti-creep and repeated loads [4]. In
a competition Çetinsoy and his colleagues used carbon fiber reinforced sandwich composites when they produced an
UAV which can fly vertical take off and landing and at the same time has horizontal flight ability [5]. Özbek and his
colleagues emphasized the importance of competiton rules to succeed at “design, build, fly competition” in their work
[6].
